Channing Tatum has long held a desire to portray Gambit on the big screen. His enthusiasm is palpable, as he expresses how eagerly he has awaited this opportunity during his time in Deadpool & Wolverine, highlighting the significance of embodying this character.

In 2017, plans were initiated for Tatum to helm his own standalone film, with Lizzy Caplan joining him as the lead. In a discussion, Caplan shared insights on how close they were to bringing this project to life, revealing the concept behind the movie.

They aimed to craft a romantic comedy reminiscent of the 1930s, woven into the superhero narrative, which would have provided a unique and engaging experience. Caplan mentions, "We progressed quite far, preparing for production. A start date was even set. I had discussions with Channing and various stakeholders, and while we faced some changes in directors, I met with Channing multiple times to sort through ideas."

However, the project was ultimately abandoned in 2019 following the merger of Fox and Disney. With Tatum finally showcasing his portrayal of Gambit, there may still be a chance for this solo venture to materialize in the future.
